During my days as a grad student at UW-Madison, my beloved grandfather died… on Good Shepherd Sunday. My campus pastor, Phil Knutson, tended to me in the midst of my loss and grief with words and actions that provided comfort and hope in God’s resurrection promise. Eleven years later, Phil died…on Good Shepherd Sunday. These two mentors—one an Iowa farmer, the other a campus pastor—followed the lead of the Good Shepherd as they each faithfully lived out their sense of vocation, one shepherding hogs, cattle, (and grandchildren!), the other shepherding students, faculty, and staff. Thanks be to God for their pastoral presence.

During these Lenten days, may this refrain from Marty Haugen’s hymn be our hope and our prayer: “Shepherd me, O God, beyond my wants, beyond my fears, from death into life.” Amen.
